OOC: Song Lyrics

I decided to write down the lyrics of all the songs in Doctor Who And The Pirates (except for Gallifreyan Buccaneer, because that's already online) so I could sing along better, and with a little help from [livejournal.com profile] maltese_penguin managed to figure them all out.

An Assassin's Lot

Merryweather:
When a sailor is a-sailing on the ocean (on the ocean),
Not getting in the way of pirate plans (pirate plans),
We wouldn't even entertain the notion ('tain the notion),
Of slaughtering the sailor and his clans (and his clans).

But when he stands between us and some treasure (and some treasure),
Then homicidal duty's to be done (to be done).
We would like to leave the sailor at his leisure (at his leisure),
But a killer's lot is not a happy one.

Pirates:
Oooh,
When homicidal duty's to be done (to be done),
An assassin's lot is not a happy one (happy one).

Merryweather:
When the honest Jacky Tar is up the rigging (up the rigging),
Or munching on his salmagundi feast (gundi feast),
We would like to leave him to his rum a-swigging (rum a-swigging),
Not force him to the ranks of the deceased (the deceased).

But when his hold is full of gold and jewelry (gold and jewelry),
With coins and gems and spices by the ton (by the ton),
Then sadly we must exercise some cruelty ('cise some cruelty),
An assassin's lot is not a happy one (happy one).

Pirates:
Oooh,
When homicidal duty's to be done (to be done),
An assassin's lot is not a happy one (happy one).

Jasper's Man

Merryweather:
I'm Jasper's man, his Caliban,
His to control, he owns my soul.
For Captain Red, I'd strike you dead.
You'd have to go, be you friend or foe.
As Red's first mate, I subjugate,
Or pulverate each man ingrate,
Each man ingrate.

Sally:
Not how I planned, blood on my hand.
I take the blame, I bear the shame,
I bear the shame.
To know this hurt was just desert,
It is my curse, can get no worse.
My heartache deep won't let me sleep.
I can't go on, my future's gone.

The Doctor:
I heard one day a gentleman say,
That sorrow is the price we pay.
The cost of care is most unfair,
For all you've lost,
Your loss brings quite a cost.
But better yet, to know regret,
There's no defense for malice prepense.

(repeat 1x, all together)

Sally:
And so, I know, I'm ready to go.
I'll make the leap, to slumber deep,
No more to weep for you.
I'll keep eternal sleep,
Just let me sleep.

Merryweather:
And so, although they don't want to go,
I must obey.
For Red I slay each stowaway and those who stray.
I won't betray,
I must obey.

The Doctor:
Look in my eye and then you'll spy
In front of you a Doctor who,
Through his purview he tells you true,
Don't bid adieu, he suffered too.

(together 6x)
I must obey.
Just let me sleep.
Don't bid adieu, I suffered too.

I Am Alone

I am alone,
I've reaped and sown,
I bear the fruits of sorrow.

But soon I sleep,
No more to weep,
For there'll be no tomorrow.

We were one heart,
Two hearts, one soul,
A source of living wonder.
But evil fate was inchoate,
And split us soon asunder.

I mean to leave the Earth,
I mean to fly.
I'll be no more alone.
Just me and I.

I mean to leave the Earth,
I mean to fly.
I'll be no more alone.
Just me and I.

I'm Better

Merryweather:
I sail the ocean blue, attentive to my duty.
With Captain Red and crew, our crew's in search of booty.
When anchor we 'weigh, and we sail away,
And find a fine ship to pursue,
The men look to me as the man they want to be.
I'm a better sailor far than you.

Pirates:
Hurrah, hurrah, Mr. Merryweather's best!
Hurrah, hurrah-

The Doctor:
Shall I put him to the test?

I am the Doctor from the TARDIS bold, you've never seen a one like me.
I'm a sailor through and through, nothing nautic I can't do,
Though I've hardly ever been to sea.

Merryweather:
I wonder if you'd win if a contest we begin,
Can you climb a rig like me?

With my maritime resource I can handle any course with great efficiency.
Although I look urbane there's still water in my veins.
Can you handle a ship like me?

Merryweather: I'm better!
The Doctor: I'm better!
Merryweather: I'm better!
The Doctor: We'll see who's better!

Pirates:
For he can sail a ship, you'll see!
Then give three cheers and one more cheer,
For one of you is far the better privateer!
Then give three cheers and get a grip,
As Merryweather sails this ship!

The Doctor:
I have a most prodigious thirst, as every sailor has who's true.
So much rum I'll down that you'll look like a clown.
I can take my drink, can you?

Merryweather:
I can down a pint or two if it's distillated brew,
I can take more rum than you!

The Doctor:
My sea legs are the best; I walk further than the rest in ocean promenadery.
In the narrowest of space, I can saunter like an ace.
Can you walk the plank like me?

The Doctor: I'm better!
Merryweather: I'm better!
The Doctor: I'm better!
Merryweather: We'll see who's better!

Pirates:
For he can walk the plank, you'll see!
So give three cheers and one more cheer,
For one of you is far the better privateer!
Then give three cheers you mountebank,
As Merryweather walks the plank!

Pirate Queen

The Doctor:
Here comes the fearsome pirate Evelyn.
Her name is Evil Evelyn, I've stuck with her through thick and thin.
Her cardie is a shade of red, it recollects the blood she shed.
These factors she will verify.
Now could you try to terrify.

Evelyn:
I'm doing my best, it's not my scene.
Whose mad idea was this pirate queen?

The Doctor:
For she is a pirate queen!
Though strange and disguised in bombazine,
She is a pirate queen.

Evelyn:
I am a pirate queen!

Pirates:
She is, three cheers for the Pirate Queen!

The Doctor:
She has the fearsome bloodthirsty mien of every pirate queen.

Evelyn:
I have?

Pirates:
Three cheers for the Pirate Queen,
Three cheers for the Pirate Queen!

Evelyn:
They call me Evil Evelyn, I am a pirate genuine.
I've sailed the ocean all my days,
Practicing my pirate ways.

Jasper:
I fear no man on land or sea.
You'll never get the best of me.
I raise my cutlass to my foe,
Your pirate queen I'll overthrow.

For I am a pirate king!
And it is, it is a glorious thing to be a pirate king!
For I am a pirate king!

Pirates:
You are! Hurrah for the Pirate King!

Jasper:
And it is, it is a glorious thing to be a pirate king!

Pirates:
It is! Hurrah for the Pirate King! Hurrah for the Pirate King!

Whoo hoo! I've never heard the Big Finish audio, but I was able to figure out the G&S songs used for all the lyrics -- "The Sun Whose Rays" was a little tricky, but I got it by the end. : ) Thanks -- that was fun!

Wow, you've never heard the BF songs and just figured them out by the lyrics? That's cool. Glad I provided fun!

*Applauds*

I think I love you. I wanted to do the same thing a long time ago, but never came further than the first song.

There are a few things I heard completely different, but English isn't my first language so was completely wrong some cases. I like that, because it is teaching me new words. I think I even learned the saying his just desert form the sixth Doctor, because I have Colin in my head saying it. But I have no idea on earth what Salmon candy is. I thought it was salmiac candy.

I think Sally sings My heartache deep instead of my heart indeed

I can down a pint or two if it is distillated brew instead of I can down a pint or two of this distillated brew I think he is bragging he can handle any drink, but I'm not sure.

:D It was a lot of fun doing this. English isn't my first language either (German here), but maltese_penguin is American and she went over it and helped me with some issues I had. I love learning new words too - I'd never heard of "malice prepense" or "inchoate" before, and I didn't know "just desert" either. The salmon candy drove me completely mad, because I didn't think "salmon candy" made sense, so I kept googling random word combinations. Couldn't find anything, finally had enough and googled salmon candy - and it's actually a real dish. It might not be in the song, but it's the closest I could get to something that makes sense, lol.

Hmmm, I can't really tell if it's one or the other, but I like "My heartache deep" better, I'll change that, thanks! I think "of this distillated brew" makes a bit more sense though, because Six is right there offering him rum.

Psh, you did almost all of it, I only helped with a couple words. (I think doctorsmythe is right with the "of distillated brew", but I really can't tell with "my heartache deep" vs "my heart indeed", though the first works better.) I'm not sure I could have done a better job: she caught a lot of lyrics I didn't.

And as a native English speaker, a lot of the lyrics are a bit odd. "Malice prepense" is a legal term, though, which explains why the adjective follows its head; legal English is heavily influenced by Norman French and does a lot of Frenchy things, like the noun-adjective order. And I just learned now what "salmon candy" is, lol. Though it does seem a bit odd that they're eating salmon in the Caribbean, I dunno what else it could be.

And thanks again for doing this, old girl, it's awesome. :)

Awww, thanks! :D

Well if you too think it's "if it's distillated brew", I will of course defer to that opinion. ;) And even if it's not salmon candy, I'm so fed up with that line now that I'm not going to try and find something better, lol.

"Salmon Candy"

[identity profile] anachrone.livejournal.com 2011-08-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Late to the party, but I'm absolutely sure the word is actually "salmagundi" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmagundi), although "salmon candy" is rather charming, too.

Yeah, I share the 6th Doctor's love for obscure vocabulary. ;)

[identity profile] theoldgirl.livejournal.com 2011-08-04 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You solved a two-year-old mystery! Haha, you're awesome.

[identity profile] d4ni.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, fabulous! I absolutely love this audio!

[identity profile] theoldgirl.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! :D

[identity profile] pbristow.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"She has the fierce and bloodthirsty mean"

The word there is actually "mien": http://dictionary.reference.com/dic?q=mien&search=search

And yeah, there are a lot of unusual and archaic words in there, reflecting the style of W.S.Gilbert's original lyrics. As mondegreens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondegreen) go, the above is perfectly excusable. =:o}

[identity profile] theoldgirl.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, thanks for correcting that! I'm glad people are speaking up to help me perfect the lyrics.

[identity profile] pbristow.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No probs. Thanks for doing this! You've even given me an idea for an evil and fiendish scheme: I wonder if I can interest the British filk community in mounting a production of DW & The Pirates at our next con...? I know we've got several people with plenty of G&S experience! =:o}

[identity profile] theoldgirl.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I bet that would be an awesome event. Good luck with it!

Can you point the way to Buccaneer lyrics?

(Anonymous) 2009-04-30 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Fantastic job!! quite an achievement.
I am desperately looking for the lyrics to Gallifreyan Buccaneer but can't find them. You said:
"decided to write down the lyrics of all the songs in Doctor Who And The Pirates (except for Gallifreyan Buccaneer, because that's already online)"
Would you mind posting the link to that?
I'd love to have the lyrics so I could sing along to that as well :-)

Oh no problem. http://robvincent.net/journal/arc/2007/01/10/gratuitous-lyrics-post/ It's the first result if you search "Gallifreyan Buccaneer lyrics" in Google. ;)
